The Steamboat Institute will hold its Second Annual Freedom Conference on Friday, August 27 and Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Steamboat Grand Resort in beautiful Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

The genius of America is in its people. To paraphrase Adam Smith, the proper roles of government are to protect us from foreign threats, to administer justice internally, protecting us from the criminal acts of other persons and to undertake projects for the common good, like highway construction, with is impractical for the private sector.

Taxes suck the vitality from a healthy economy. America is great because of its people, not because of its government. If government is allowed to excessively drain the resources of the people, the enterprise, creativity and resourcefulness of the people is limited.

Free market capitalism is an essential element of a free society. The alternative is command and control by the government–an entity quite ill-suited to make business and economic decisions that will have a profound effect on us all. History is our proof. Where markets have been most free, standards of living have been highest and prosperity greatest. Where there is greater command and control, like Eastern Europe before the fall of the iron curtain, the people have suffered.

At the Steamboat Institute, we are Defenders of Capitalism!

Appeasement is not a viable foreign policy. As George Washington taught us over 200 years ago, nations act in their own self interest. Weakness can and will be exploited. Among the proper roles of government is protection from foreign threats. We can only have peace through strength.

Freedom is not free. It is paid for every day, not just by vigilant citizens, but by our brave men and women in uniform. They deserve our undying gratitude, support, and respect.

Individual Liberty is the cornerstone of The Steamboat Institute. Only through the exercise of Liberty can the individual and society, as a whole, recognize their full potential and greatness. Liberty can survive only where the reach of government is limited, and this requires our vigilance. Left to its own devices, the power of government will expand unchecked, eroding our Liberty daily.

But with Freedom comes responsibility. We are all responsible for our actions and their effects on others. We must exercise self-governance to avoid surrendering our Liberty to others.

The Steamboat Institute Promotes Five Basic Founding Principles of this Great Country:
1. Limited Government Where Government is not Limited, the People are not Free.
2. Lower Taxes No one can spend your money better than you.
3. Free Markets Free Market Capitalism is an essential element of Freedom itself.
4. Strong National Defense A fundamental role of Government is protect us from foreign threats.
5. Individual Rights and Responsibilities The basis for all Free Societies throughout time.

Conference Information

To pursue our educational purpose and for the inspiration of our members, The Steamboat Institute will hold its Second Annual Freedom Conference on August 27 and 28, 2010 at the Steamboat Grand Resort in beautiful Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Confirmed speakers include:

Tony Blankley, co-host of National Public Radio’s Left, Right and Center, columnist, executive vice president of Edelman Worldwide public relations, television political commentator, and former GOP spokesman

Yaron Brook, President and Executive Director of the Ayn Rand Institute. He is a regular contributor to Forbes.com and a contributing editor of The Objective Standard. A former finance professor, he has been published in academic as well as popular publications, and his opinion-editorials appear in major newspapers. He is frequently interviewed on national TV and radio. Dr. Brook lectures on Objectivism, business ethics and foreign policy at college campuses, community groups and corporations across America and throughout the world.

Dan Mitchell, Senior Fellow, The Cato Institute. Daniel J. Mitchell is a top expert on tax reform and supply-side tax policy. Mitchell is a strong advocate of a flat tax and international tax competition. Prior to joining Cato, Mitchell was a senior fellow with The Heritage Foundation, and an economist for Senator Bob Packwood and the Senate Finance Committee. He also served on the 1988 Bush/Quayle transition team and was Director of Tax and Budget Policy for Citizens for a Sound Economy. His articles can be found in such publications as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Investor’s Business Daily, and Washington Times. He is a frequent guest on radio and television and a popular speaker on the lecture circuit. Mitchell holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. in economics from George Mason University.
