Steamboat Institute’s Energy Summit Scholarship and Essay Contest

The Scholarship and Essay Contest Application Period has Closed. 

On March 11-12, 2022, Steamboat Institute is hosting an Energy and Climate Policy Summit in Steamboat Springs, CO. Scholarships to attend, including travel, hotel, and food, as well as monetary prizes are available to winners of our Essay Contest.

Scholarships are available for students and young professionals under age 30. Each scholarship includes event registration, two nights’ lodging in Steamboat Springs, and travel to/from the event. (Up to $250 airfare will be reimbursed after Summit attendance.)

Essay cash prizes will only be awarded to Colorado high school students.

Prompt
There is much debate on whether the U.S. should eliminate use of fossil fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. What, if any, changes would you recommend for U.S. energy use for individuals, families, and businesses? Please include an explanation of the impact of any such changes on personal freedom and the finances of businesses and individuals.

Purpose
This essay will challenge students to explore U.S. energy use and how policies can impact individual freedom. Students should use clear examples to argue their points.

Rules and Requirements

  • Essays should be 500-750 words. Any submissions below or above the required word count will not be considered for the prize. Correct spelling, grammar, and sentence structure will be considered.
  • When stating facts, data, numbers, quotes, or other information, citation of the source is required. A link to the source is acceptable. There is no need to submit a formal, formatted bibliography.
  • Essays should be submitted via the Steamboat Institute website no later than February 17, 2022, at 11:59pm MT. Winners will be announced the following week.

Eligibility
High school students in Colorado or college students and young professionals nationwide.

Prize
Colorado high school students will compete for a monetary prize, as well as the opportunity to attend the Steamboat Institute’s Energy and Climate Policy Summit at the Steamboat Grand in Steamboat Springs, CO, on March 11-12, 2022. Costs covered include ticket to the Policy Summit, hotel, travel, and meals. (Up to $250 airfare will be reimbursed after Summit attendance.)
– 1st Prize: $1,000
– 5 Runner-up Prizes: $500 each

College students and young professionals will compete for the opportunity to attend the Steamboat Institute’s Energy and Climate Policy Summit at the Steamboat Grand in Steamboat Springs, CO, on March 11-12, 2022.
